Google Chrome browser for Android

Google Chrome browser for Android

 Description

Google Chrome browser for Android currently lacks a built-in user privacy guard, allowing users to delete specific Web links with the click of a button. There is no default way for users to prevent data tracking after you have logged in with your Google account.

Google's Chrome for Android uses Google's SafeSearch algorithm to protect users' privacy by eliminating the display of potentially inappropriate content. Any time you visit a site that contains sexually explicit or objectionable content, the browser removes it from the experience. If the browser fails to recognize or properly remove any of the flagged content in the safe search database, you are shown a warning. Now, Android users will be able to restore a full user privacy guard that will scan your entire browser history before displaying the search result. If your search history contains a Google URL, Google's SafeSearch algorithm will prevent it from showing up in your search results. Google's new privacy guard will appear in the main interface of the browser once you log in with your Google account. Simply tap the three dots at the bottom of the browser interface, then click View Account Settings and scroll down to Remove SafeSearch. You will then see your entire Google browser history. Click to delete any Google URLs you wish to remove. Here is Google's description of how the privacy guard works: "First, the browser shows you a simple screen that says 'Do not use this browser, please check with your browser provider about settings that might help.' Next you'll see a screen that shows you a link that leads you to your current search provider's privacy settings. That's when you'll decide if you want to use the tool that provides more privacy or if you want to use Google's solution. The blocker will be removed after you've used the browser for five hours or for 30 days of regular use." If you're interested in testing Google's new privacy guard, simply open a new tab and install the latest version of Chrome for Android. It's expected to arrive in the next several weeks. At this point, Google's new privacy guard is exclusive to Chrome for Android and not yet available for Chrome for iOS, according to Android Authority. However, Google said that a similar option is on the horizon for iOS users, although details about the feature are not currently available. Over the past several months, Google has been aggressively expanding its offerings to the mobile platform. The company recently expanded the availability of features like Sync and Data Saver for iOS. Android Authority pointed out, however, that Apple's Safari already has a default privacy guard. So, users of Safari and iOS can continue to lock down their browsers with the click of a button. For more information about Google's new privacy guard for Android, check out Google's support page. Via The Verge See Also: Find more news like this at ZDNet's Tech News homepage. Multimedia Player

 Description

Multimedia Player

Many of you have noted that the app is only designed for audio, but multimedia files are not properly supported. So far that appears to be limited to audio files, but there may be an avenue for proper multimedia playback as the next release is likely to include all formats. Just as with iWatch's Multimedia Player, it's worth pointing out that Apple still does not allow multitasking on the iPhone. They've put limits on the iPhone to discourage us from multitasking with apps, and they could easily do the same with the iOS media player. That's an issue I've wanted fixed for a while, but I believe it will come in a future release. Share Apple has given us a lot of nifty sharing features with iOS 5. That's also the reason I think Apple isn't allowing multitasking in the iOS media player. If Apple has to make it stop while they're working on new features, it's probably just not worth the headache. I was happy to see that Apple finally added instant copy and paste, which should be something a lot of people are looking for. The recipient should be the first app you want to share a file. But if the files are not stored in iDisk and are in the same directory with your iPhone, the iOS device will throw an error. Some of the media player restrictions are also likely tied to Apple's new push to push media playback through iCloud. Apple has made a lot of noise about streaming all your content directly from iCloud through iTunes Match. I want to be able to watch my multimedia files on my iPad while it's charging on the nightstand, but in order to do that I have to be on the same Wi-Fi network with my iPad. That wouldn't really work with Apple's push to have users have a single, portable device for their music and video files. The media player limits probably don't make sense as it would affect most users (you would have to go back to using iDisk) but they likely aren't much of an issue at all for people streaming music and videos from iTunes. Multimedia Player - Text Version MultiMedia Player - Text Version - Low Quality Setting up iTunes Match is fairly easy, but when you set up your iPod it still gives you a number of options. In order to save time, I'll show you how to get the most out of iTunes Match using iTunes Connect's built-in media player to stream the content from your iPhone to your iPad. You can turn off iTunes Match's iCloud locker feature if you don't want it. For all other purposes, including streaming, iCloud locker should work perfectly well. Multimedia Player - Setting Up iTunes Match Make sure that you're already signed into iTunes Connect with the same Apple ID you used for your iOS device. You can skip that step if you're trying to start with the iPad's iDisk on the iPad's SD card. Apple's new player for iTunes Match has a big button to start playing media files on the iPad. On the iPad this is where you go to watch your content, and it's also where you go to launch the player if you're just copying files. When you first open the player you have a few options, but only the default will work with the iPad's iDisk. I've added the link to iDisk here because iDisk isn't available for iOS 5 yet. Apple's new streaming feature is called iTunes Match Media Player, and I'm not going to spend a lot of time explaining it. Just make sure you have iTunes running on your iPad with iDisk attached and select the right button when you launch iTunes Match's media player for playback. I don't think most people will need to use iCloud Drive or make use of the iCloud document viewer since they can already save files to iDisk. It's a nice feature, but I don't think anyone is going to feel much of a need to connect their iPad and iPhone over a Wi-Fi network and save their multimedia files to iCloud. You do have a lot of options for streaming files from iCloud, but you're only going to care about a few of them (namely the music player and the Dropbox uploader). You'll probably just want to save your multimedia files to iDisk and have iTunes Match stream them directly from the iTunes Media Store (you can download some free movies here). Once you have the right buttons, start streaming. If you're trying to use the media player on your iPhone with the iPhone 5 you'll notice that it doesn't use iTunes' default playback controls. It's probably because Apple hasn't yet made those controls available to the media player, but it also doesn't use any of the widgets that it uses on its mobile OS. To get your multimedia files in iTunes Match, select the files you want to upload from your iPhone or iPad and drag them into the media player window. Be sure to copy all of the player's properties (title, artist, album, track, and so on) before you drag files into the player window. This is how iTunes Match looks on an iPhone 5 running iOS 5, and it does work just fine. You can also easily set the video playback to a lower quality, but you won't be able to do that for audio. When you change the audio quality you still get the option to switch to lower audio quality. Once you have your media files in iTunes Match you can actually open iTunes. This is how iTunes Match looks in a specific folder on your iPhone. You can also change this folder's location in the configuration panel (if you're using iTunes on your iPad) but you won't be able to change the iTunes Match folder on your iPad's SD card.
I mentioned above that you can turn off iCloud locker if you don't want it. This is a feature for paying customers and all other users will see it. However, this feature has no effect on the playback function of the media player. If you have multiple player profiles you'll have to switch between them when you play music from iTunes Match, but you won't have to remove the files

VLC for Android

VLC for Android

Description

VLC for Android This is a continuation of my Android tidbits. During my lengthy (in both directions) iPhone-to-Android transition I played my fair share of videos on Android phones. I was especially impressed with how well they handled MPEG-2 streams, VEGAC, MPEG-4 and MPEG-4 AVC/H.264. It’s obvious that AVC and H.264 are not so much used anymore but MPEG-4 remains widely used. This is a great evolution as we see how a generation passes and we see even Android phones have hardware support for this new format. There’s an upgrade path from DV to AVC/H.264 but unfortunately most phones support only one codec or a bit of both. As time goes on and more devices support AVC/H.264 we will see that you will not have to turn anything on and manually switch back to DV. All devices from Samsung to HTC can make this upgrade in software so the big difference between phones like the Galaxy S II and Nexus S (and many others) is how much pressure they put on the manufacturer to support both codecs in the device. During my second trip to China I was excited to find a simple AVC/H.264-encoding app for my LG G2. The app appeared to be an app for Android in general but it actually only supported VLC so I could run my iPhone files in full HD quality without any extra effort. I had initially considered getting the MediaToolkit application that seemed to support all Android phones (except the iPhone) but that application requires Windows (for instance) which I didn’t have. VLC was free for the Android platform and it worked perfectly. I’m talking high-quality streaming across a 2GB LTE connection. So now you should know how to make this upgrade but it’s one of those things that’s easy to forget if you have a fresh Android phone for the first time. You will probably want to give the app another go if you’re not happy with the quality or you like to manually tweak video quality or audio playback. The VLC Android app There’s another app that can help you make this conversion and it’s the very popular media player VLC. This app is generally used to stream media to computers but VLC also has a mode that can convert your files. Since I mentioned AVC/H.264 I thought it would be great to see if this app would play those files in Android. VLC for Android provides support for VLC for Windows and VLC for Mac but also allows you to run your Windows videos in Android 4.0 or higher so you’re ready to go. There’s a default player that allows you to manually switch between the two devices so you can easily go back and forth. VLC has a free version that supports playback of all video formats you could ever need so you don’t have to worry about data storage and you don’t need to have a very large data plan for it either. The free version is great because the features of the premium version cannot be accessed without paying for a subscription. For $9.99 a year you will gain access to playback of VLC media files in Android. The iOS version of VLC also has a freemium version that lets you skip audio tracks but it has limited support for playback of videos. VLC Media Player for Android The audio and video playback doesn’t need to be perfect. Just play them and see how they perform. If the playback quality is not good enough the playback of the videos might be too. There are several different video codecs that can be supported by VLC. If you start with a lot of files that are both high quality and of the same size you can then just choose the video codec that gives you the best possible playback on Android. For videos of any size the Android version of VLC is great as it has one of the fastest input/output speeds I’ve seen for a multimedia player. It’s fast, it’s easy to use and it works perfectly. If you don’t like the audio bitrate or playback speed of VLC it doesn’t matter because your iPhone files will be fine for everything else. There’s a warning for some files though. The app can only play files of at least 720p which is fine for smartphone users but Android tablets and TVs will have a higher resolution. If you’re ready to enjoy your video content on Android then go ahead and grab the Android version of VLC Media Player. Your device will probably be a little slow at the beginning but it will be fine for all of your files. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video. If you’re ready to get your videos and audio files on Android then you should also know that the Android system allows you to download and install apps for free. It’s easy and sometimes the apps you want are the very same apps that are available for the iOS platform. That’s great because you don’t have to have two different systems in place. All of the apps you see in the Android Market are free to download and there’s no added fee for the Android system (via the Windows Phone Marketplace) if you want to access the Android application to play media.

Fun Race 3D

Fun Race 3D
Look, I’m not saying Racing 3D is the next-level, top-of-the-line gaming experience that the PC and consoles have to offer. But, for this $10 bet about whether gaming should be on a flat screen, I think the number of dollars that are betting against me makes me, a casual gamer, a reasonable generalization to have some confidence in. If you haven’t watched Racing 3D, you’re probably thinking the same thing I did when it got up on my screen. Is this a game? It’s not good at all. But it’s something different that I can actually get interested in. In fact, this game has been out on the other side of the console world for some time now, because you can get the PlayStation 3 version in that big, brick-walled, video game store that’s been collecting dust in your garage. You can get the game from GameStop. If you want to take it to your friends’ houses and you just want to have fun, then they’ll usually buy the game for you. But, if you’re looking for a new, exciting experience, this racing game has been a fantastic ride up until this week. Celerate 3D, the developer behind Racing 3D, has made one heck of a game. In fact, I think I enjoyed Racing 3D more than I do the racing games that come out from companies like Codemotion, Revolve, and Overdrive. This game puts you in some amazing cars, that are inspired by some of the greatest racers out there. I could easily be talking about Mario Kart, maybe Cars, or maybe even Gran Turismo. You’re in a tin can that flies through 3D worlds, where you do crazy things like try to stay upright or try to beat the engine temperature with some puffs of blue smoke that float up into the sky. And, in the world of Racing 3D, things have a tendency to go wrong. Sometimes you go off the road and have to be dragged out by a tank. Other times, your engine coolant runs down too low and you have to be towed out of the race. But, you can’t get out of the race. You just have to race it out and try to make it to the finish line. You can win your race and even go on to win a “Smoke of Victory” trophy if you manage to keep your cool while things are going wrong. You start off with a car like a Peugeot 205 T16 that has a crazy 3D faceplate that you can customize. If you like the car, you can go to the racer’s podium at the end of the race and win your prize of sorts. The idea is that winning is about speed and having fun. Then you can go out and race other drivers in different countries and then other terrains. Eventually, you’ll come to America and race on a dirt track. You can have a race that will last for days. Your car will break down, but you’re having fun racing it. Plus, if you go fast enough, your car will spin out a lot and explode. Don’t worry though. This is racing. Things are fun. That’s why we race. It’s fun to blow things up. That’s why racing is fun. Of course, the dirt track that you’re racing on has cars that are one part 3D graphics and one part racecar racing. You know what I mean? With other racers, things are a little more complicated. The dirt track you’re racing on has 2-3 parts, where you have to race all sorts of cars. You have to go fast and try not to make things explode in your way. But, even with the intricacies that come from having to race all sorts of cars, I think racing 3D is actually really good at putting you into a video game and making you feel like you’re racing. One of the things that really makes Racing 3D a fun experience is the racing mode. In fact, I’ve spent more time in Racing 3D’s racing mode than I’ve spent in other racing games. You can race it all the way through and still find that there’s still more to do. There’s always someone who won’t get out of the way for you. They’ll be in front of you, so you’ll try to go around them and try to get out of their way. Then, the person behind you will try to go around you, and the next person behind him will try to go around you. Then it’ll just go around and around in a circle. You’ll lose more time racing, but you’ll never get to finish the race. It’s crazy, but it’s fun to just try and finish the race. When you finish it, you’ll be shown a score to see how you did. If you have enough points, you can go out and try to beat that score. There’s a little bit of competition and it’s really cool to go out there and try to win a race. Of course, there’s no real real prize in the race. You just get bragging rights. Plus, if you happen to finish first, you can also win a trip to Mexico, which is cool.
